Request for National Interest Exception for a Current Visa Holder

Presidential Proclamation 10143, related to reducing the spread of COVID-19, suspends the entry into the United States, as immigrants or nonimmigrants, of all aliens who were physically present within the Schengen Area during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry into the United States. Certain travelers seeking to provide vital support for critical infrastructure, and qualified travelers seeking to enter the United States for purposes related to humanitarian travel, public health response, and national security can be granted a National Interest Exception (NIE) to the proclamation. First, review the Embassy’s webpage Information About COVID-19 and Travel to the United States regarding your purpose of travel.  Please note that as of March 2, 2021, conditions to qualify for an NIE have changed. Some travelers who have previously been approved an NIE may no longer qualify under the revised conditions. These changes do not affect academics, students, or journalists.  For full details about these changes, please see the Department of State’s webpage National Interest Exceptions for Certain Travelers from the Schengen Area, United Kingdom, and Ireland.

If you have an urgent need to travel to the United States and you believe you may qualify for an NIE after reviewing the above information, email BrusselsVisa@state.gov with the subject line NIE Request: [Your surname]. ONLY send this email if you meet ALL of the four below conditions. We will not process your request if these four conditions are not met. If you are not in Belgium currently, or you do not plan to travel to the United States in the next 30 days, please wait until those conditions are met.
