Information About COVID-19 and Travel to the United States

Due to limited embassy staffing and in solidarity with the Government of Belgium’s request for people to avoid cross-border travel, we are ONLY able to accept appointments from residents of Belgium.  Any appointments made from outside of Belgium will be canceled.

The World Health Organization has determined that multiple countries within the Schengen Area are experiencing sustained person-to-person transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19).  The Department of State has issued a Global Level 3 Health Advisory advising U.S. citizens to reconsider travel abroad due to the global impact of COVID-19. For additional information visit the Embassy’s COVID-19 website:

Travelers returning from the specified countries in Europe must stay home for 14 days after returning from travel, monitor their health, and practice social distancing.

Presidential Proclamation 9984 suspends the entry into the United States, as immigrants or nonimmigrants, of all aliens who were physically present within the Schengen Area during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry into the United States. The Proclamation became effective 5:00 a.m. Brussels time on Saturday, March 14, 2020.

This proclamation also does not apply to:

  • U.S. citizens
  • Lawful permanent residents (LPR) of the United States
  • Children of a U.S. citizen or LPR
  • Spouses of U.S. citizens and LPRs

Please visit for the full list of exceptions.

All nonimmigrant visa appointments are canceled through the end of April. If the proclamation applies to you, but you believe you fall under one of the exceptions and have an urgent need to travel to the United States, please visit our visa website for information on how to apply for an emergency appointment. At this time, we have not canceled any Immigrant Visa appointments, aside from K-1 applicants. We will continue to process lost/stolen green card requests.
