Tim Richardson is Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium in Brussels. He has returned to Belgium after previously serving there as Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs from 2012 to 2015. He is a member of the Senior Foreign Service.

Much of his diplomatic career has focused on Russia and Iran. Most recently, he was Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs at the United States Embassy in Moscow from 2018 to 2021. He also served in Moscow from 2003 to 2007 as regional refugee coordinator and served in the Department of State’s Office of Russian Affairs from 2000 to 2002.

Tim was deputy director of the Department’s Office of Iranian Affairs from 2015 to 2017 and deputy director in the Iran Regional Presence Office in Dubai from 2008 to 2011.

His other diplomatic postings include U.S. embassies in Georgia, Malaysia, and Afghanistan. He speaks French, Russian, Persian and Georgian.

He received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Washington & Lee University and studied international relations in the graduate program at the University of Chicago.

He and his wife, Carolyn, have two daughters.
